Romeo's ears perked up as he took another step. He glanced at Petal as he lifted yet another foot out of the ash and back into it. It was like sifting through water, going through the ocean and the waves willing not to move. He looked up yet again, hoping for the sight of the lake. Would it never come? Stupid Romeo. It'll come, you just don't believe it will. You'll probably die before you even get there. He lifted yet another foot, sifting through the ash when he saw the lake. He froze, feeling like jumping for joy if he wasn't so tired. They were so close...he could see the lake for goodness sakes. "We're almost there!" He said with a little enthusiasm, but more exhaustion than enthusiasm. Remember little Romeo... Remember what? Leave me alone! Just leave me alone! I can take care of myself and Petal...she'll be fine. I'll help her if she needs it. But you need to just SHUT UP. A soft chuckle sounded inside his head. That. That right there. I just was going to say remember not to blow up. You're good about not doing that, you're a good horse. But, you know what stress can do to you. Be quiet, he thought grudgingly.

-Petal-
The young femme jumped with excitement, nearly missing a tree trunk. Her eyes had been drooping closed in exhaustion, but now they were wide with excitement and her ears were pricked forward. She picked up the pace to a trot, before she looked back at Romeo. "Romeo! I can see it! We are so close!"
[/b]the fae whinnied in excitement. She picked up her pace again, to a canter, her tail flicking.[/color] "Come on, Romeo!"[/b] Petal hollered over her shoulder, before she disappeared down a slop with a large splash. The water felt so chilly and nice on her pelt, washing away the ash and the soot that had once turned her from pure cremello to cremello on the top and black on the bottom. The young femme drank greedily, before she dove under the water, going deep and coming back up again, her exhaustion forgotten. The water felt amazing, calming her brain and muscles. She drank more and more, until she felt like she was going to burst with the fluid. Shivering with joy, she plunged back into the water again, pushing her way to the bottom until she came back up, gasping for air and laughing. She swam around a bit, waiting for Romeo. Romeo watched as Petal ran to the water and he was right on her heels, cantering down the slope although she had already gotten into the water. He splashed into it, water flying upwards and splashing anything that was near him. He dipped his head fully into the water with just his ears above it and gulped in the water that despite the beating sun was chilly. Dropping to his knees he rolled in the water, momentarily forgetting the worries of predators for both of them. His muscles felt much better, the cold water seemingly making all the ache and pain of them go away along with the fact that he was no longer standing. After a moment of that he took several more gulps of water and his insides felt very wishy washy but he really could not care less. He ventured into the deep end a bit, starting to swim which seemed a bit better than standing. "Thank God." He muttered, they had actually made it. Sure, the fire had still had it's affects and they would surely struggle for food. But at least they had water...and something that kept the heat from killing them for a bit.

-Petal-
The break from the heat was like diving into heaven. The young fae looked directly at Romeo and spoke, "Romeo, thank you so much. You proved to be brave, kind and outstanding, helping me here. I much appreciate it, like you would have no idea. It seemed I would have died back there, had I no idea where I was going. But you knew, and helped me. Thank you, Romeo." the femme spoke from the heart, wanting him to know how much she appreciated his kindness and help. He seemed awfully quiet, but it was nice to have his company for the time being. She knew they were probably going to go their separate ways now, whether she wanted to be without the company or not. She gave her head a shake, carefully replacing her mane to where it was supposed to sit before and flicked her tail. Exhaustion filled her limbs, causing her to stumble as she walked through the shallower water. With a flick of her tail, she raised up again and stood straight, swaying slightly, the heat of the sun reflecting from her cremello coat, causing it to shine it seemed. She swayed for another moment in the refreshing breeze before taking another step, followed by another, and another, and finally she was walking fine, on the ground. She herded herself over to the edge of the water where she could lay down in the water. Instead, she stood in the water for a moment, letting herself refresh.
The fae turned, her eyes widening in fear and her ears pinned to her head, to the sound of other hoof beats. Another horse? How? More have survived? A fiery chestnut stallion caught her attention, his coat bright and like a giant flame in the sunlight. She became suddenly soaked by the spray of white foam and water. He seemed so full of energy and spirit, instead of run-down and exhausted like herself and Romeo. She watched him quietly for another moment as he went to lay down under a stick that used to be a tree, now bare after the disastrous event. "Excuse me. What would your name be?" the fae nickered gently, soft and welcoming. Her voice was soft like the breeze, although somewhat hoarse from the smoke still in her lungs.

Romeo nodded. "Thanks." He muttered, a little taken back and uncomfortable at her compliment but all the same...he didn't know. He appreciated her appreciation but he wasn't very used to other horses speaking to him like that. He watched her get out the water and stumble onto the ground, feeling a little bit of regret for just letting her leave. He didn't want her to leave, he didn't want to be all by himself again. At least you know there's other horses out there Romeo. Stop being such a baby, you'll find someone else to share company with. Romeo flicked his ears at the sight of a chestnut galloping towards them and he wanted to flee, badly. Like that one! The voice chimed in. He shook his mane, also as if shaking his head at the voice. He didn't want to have the company of the stallion, they often wanted to mess with him or pick on him for his quiet nature, not joining in on the rest of the other bachelors jokes and banter, he often became the target. So now, other stallions for company were not something of interest. The chestnut was now lying under a completely bare tree and Romeo turned away, dunking his nose to drink more water.

-Petal-
Petal looked at Romeo, almost longingly, before she sighed and turned away. A thought caught in her head, causing her to gasp. Was she getting feeling for him? No.. No, she couldn't be getting feelings for Romeo. They aren't even alike. He wouldn't want a mare who is blind and deaf on one side either. With a sigh of defeat, she admitted defeat to herself. I must. she thought despairingly. With a idea in her head, she spun to Romeo. "Romeo!"
[/b] she whinnied, hauling herself into the water toward him."Romeo! May I please stay with you for awhile? I get lonely and long for company often when I am alone, and I often get myself into trouble, trouble I am not strong enough for right now." she asked, but to her it sounded more like a beg.

Romeo drank greedily from the water, thankful to be there. He lifted his head slowly to look at Petal who was now calling out to him. He perked up his ears, looking at her with a little confused as she came over to him, pushing herself through the water. He was silent while she spoke, and for a moment after. He wanted badly to jump up and down and say 'Yeah yeah yeah!' but a moment of hesitation washed over him. She wouldn't be happy following him or whatever, more likely miserable. Oh my gosh Romeo, if you don't stop this non-sense and take her company.... The voice inside his head sounded, making him feel rather self-fish. He shouldn't, but he couldn't resist saying yes. He nodded with a hint of a smile trying to force it's way through. "Okay."

Petal nearly had her mouth drop open in shock and joy, "Really? Oh thank-you, thank-you, thank-you! Thank-you, Romeo!" she laughed happily, a twinkle in her eyes. She gave a silent gasp realizing how it might make him uncomfortable to act this way, "Thank-you, Romeo."she tried this time, still smiling but more in a calmer fashion. She noticed it looked like a hint of smile was trying to climb up Romeo's expression, but either he refused to let it, or the smile just wasn't ready to jump out yet. She felt her tail flicking joyfully behind her, and her audits perked high, waiting for his response. She really hoped she hadn't made him feel uncomfortable by her excited reaction, but she was rather excitable when she got what she really wants.
